DIA Founding Partner. The origins of Café Pesto lay in the quaint harbor town of Kawaihae where a small take-out pizzeria that began in 1988 quickly evolved into an award winning dining establishment on the resort coast of South Kohala. Our inception coincided with the birth of Hawaii Regional Cuisine with which we became notably associated. Despite growing world-class competition on the South Kohala coast, we continue to be the benchmark for consistency, quality and innovation. Following this growth and success we sought out a more locally based market for our concept in the lush surroundings of Hilo, a city where the best of old Hawaii remained in an era otherwise forgotten. Here, turn of the century buildings – survivors of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, devastating tsunamis and economic depressions – have stood poised against the ravages of time. These timeless structures are now the foundation of what has become the renaissance of downtown Hilo. On July 10, 1992 the newly restored S. Hata building, originally constructed in 1912 by the Hata family and known as the Grande Dame of Hilo, became the new home of Cafe Pesto, Hilo Bay. With its rattan chairs, tall ceilings, brass detailed exhibition kitchen and […]

DIA Founding Partners. KTA Super Stores started in 1916, as a modest 500 square-foot grocery and dry goods store, by Koichi & Taniyo Taniguchi. Since then, KTA has grown to a five (5) store chain, serving the residents of Hawai‘i island. When they first opened, the couple had no idea their modest business would someday evolve into a multi-store supermarket chain, employing over 800 associates. The couple simply believed they were assisting family and friends obtain necessary grocery and household items. Early on, Koichi began taking grocery orders from Hilo families and delivered the much needed merchandise by bicycle. In time, the couple built their pick-up and delivery business to the point where they were able to afford a “real” store. By 1940, a branch store was established in downtown Hilo. This proved to be a wise decision, when the original structure the couple began with, was destroyed by the tsunami of 1946. This branch (Keawe) store was converted into a supermarket in 1953, and was later followed by the opening of the Kailua-Kona store in 1959 (relocated to its present location in 1975). Just seven (7) years later, the Puainako store was opened, followed by Keauhou in 1984, and […]

DIA Founding Partner. The winery has seen many changes since it first started some 25+ years ago, but the commitment to produce unique, award-winning wines made with Aloha will always remain in the heart of Volcano Winery! Along with the signature wines which the winery was built on (Symphony Mele, Volcano Red, Guava Wine, Blush, and Macadamia Nut Honey Wine), the winery continues to grow and when it became obvious that the Pinot Noir grape was suited very well to the special cool climate in Volcano, the winery started producing small amounts (about 300 bottles) of Pinot Noir using frozen grapes from California. Now as their own vines are maturing, the winery will be able to introduce their “Estate Pinot Noir” and “Estate Cayuga White” from vines that were planted 4 to 5 years ago. Although we will have to sell these small volume produced Estate wines by the glass rather than as a part of our tastings, we hope you will join us for some Aloha and taste the uniqueness of a cayuga White or Pinot Noir wine that was grown, produced, and bottled right here at Volcano Winery!

DIA Founding Partner. Dolphin Bay Hotel was built in 1968 by the Alexander family. Currently managed by John Alexander the hotel has 18 rooms (with an additional 6 units available for long-term stay in the Iliahi Apartments across the street). All rooms feature a fully equipped kitchen, bath and shower, cable TV, room fans, and free WIFI. Dolphin Bay Hotel does not have a pool or restaurant — but good eating is within walking distance, with swimming and evening entertainment close by. If desired, a home cooked meal may be prepared in the room. We do not cater to those people who are interested in the large multi-story luxury hotel, and all that goes with it. Instead, people who come and rent a small car and go off to the exotic points of interest by day, returning in the evening are happy here. We are more than happy to map out trips, arrange tours, advise on restaurants and any other service people may desire. We recommend several days in the Hilo area to adequately cover all there is to offer. Being so close to town and yet in such a quiet area makes us very popular with folks who come […]
