How to Experience Mauna Kea

How to experience the Mauna Kea Summit

The summit of Mauna Kea is close to 14,000 feet high and only accessible with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. There are car rental companies that have 4-wheel drive vehicles for rent, we advise you to be careful since not all companies allow driving to the summit.   Out of Hilo, Arnott’s Lodge does summit tours, and all other tour companies which visit the summit depart from Kailua-Kona. So, we suggest renting a car to get the best experience of our sacred summit. Regular vehicles can drive to the Onizuka Visitor’s Center located at approximately 9,000 feet and on a clear day you’ll have incredible views of Mauna Loa, the Kohala Mountains, the island of Maui and witness the expanse of the big island. Get more up-to-date info about the weather at the summit by visiting mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu
